Sharing your screen

Watch it in a short video

Video calling with Talk 1:05

Available in packages with Office. Talk is included in your WebOké Nextcloud as soon as your package has at least one Office Suite licence. Then everyone in your package can use Talk, even users without their own licence. If you don't have Office, you won't see Talk in the menu. See Which apps are included in my package?.

During a call, you can let others watch your screen. Handy for giving a presentation, explaining something or looking at a document together.

How to share your screen

  1. Start or join a call (see Video calling and meetings: camera, microphone, background and raising your hand).
  2. Click the screen sharing button at the bottom (1), the screen icon with the arrow pointing up.
  3. Your browser asks what you want to share. Choose:
    • Entire screen: everything you see on your computer. If you have two monitors, you choose which one.
    • Window: just one programme, for example your presentation. Notifications from your mail stay out of view.
    • Tab (Chrome and Edge): just one tab of your browser. Here you can also share the tab's audio, for example from a video.
  4. Click Share. The others can now see your screen. Your own browser shows a bar indicating that your screen is being shared.
  5. To stop, use the same button in Talk, or click Unshare in your browser's bar.

Tip: it's best to share one window rather than your entire screen. That way, others won't see notifications, passwords or other windows you open by accident.

Can't everyone share their screen?

A moderator decides under Conversation settings, Permissions, who can share. With Restricted, participants can only share their screen once a moderator allows it. If you don't see the screen sharing button or it's greyed out, ask the moderator of the conversation.

On Mac: give permission first

The first time, macOS asks whether your browser may record the screen. Go to System settings, Privacy & Security, Screen Recording (in newer versions of macOS: Screen & System Audio Recording) and switch on your browser. Then restart your browser.

On your phone

In the Talk app on your phone, you can watch someone else sharing their screen. Sharing your own screen is easiest from a computer. See also Talk on your phone and notifications.
